Sri Swami Charitra Saramrit English Translation Chapter 15

Shree Swami Samarth, my salutations to all Swami devotees. Today we are going to learn about Sri Swami Charitra Saramrita Chapter 15.
Pilgrimage, insisting on the means of hatha yoga, even if properly versed in the Vedas and sciences, even if one devotes himself to Sri Swami only with pure and absolute spirit, even if he devotes himself to Sri Swami’s soul, one achieves all four purusharthas. We are freed from sin, fever and misery. One can reach the path of salvation by crossing the ocean of existence. If we do good deeds and good conduct, Sri Swami grants us salvation and opens the gate of heaven.
If we chant Naamsmaran regularly, we are freed from the cycle of birth and death. This should always be in your mind. With this guide, the librarian starts the next chapter.
Sri Swami never stayed in one place for long. He visited all the nearby villages and listened to the chants of his devotees. And used to relieve the sufferings of his devotees by giving them proper guidance and even performing miracles if necessary.
Once Sri Swami came to Mangalvedha and Sri Swami was sleeping on the ground with a bed of thorns. In the same village there lived a poor man named Basappa Teli. And looking for Sarpan to light the hearth in the house, Basappa reaches where Sri Swami was sleeping.
A thorn sticks in Basappa’s leg while reaching Sri Swami. While removing the thorn from his leg, Basappa’s eyes fell on Sri Swami lying on the thorn bed. And Basappa thought that, ‘If this thorn pierced us so much, we would have felt so much pain and slept on the thorns in this digambara state. Surely he must be a good man.’ Then Shri Swami shouts at Basappa and says ‘What do you want to do whether we are good men or anyone else?’
Basappa is shocked to hear this and again says in his mind, ‘oh god, these are also Mind listener.’ Then Shri Swami shouts at Basappa, ‘If we are not mind listener, how come you have someone else in the trouble. Let’s go.’ Hearing this, Basappa is convinced that Sri Swami is not an ordinary person but a human form of God himself.
Later, Basappa became an ardent devotee of Sri Swami. He was so absorbed in the service of Sri Swami that sometimes he did not even remember his wife and children. The innocent villagers of the village think that Sri Swami is crazy because of his boyish demonic attitude. Therefore, the villagers and his wife used to insult Basappa as he was ruining his world by following the footsteps of this crazy Maharaj. However, Basappa did not stop serving Sri Swami.
Basappa did not know when it was evening when Sri Swami was doing seva for one such day. Then Shri Swami said to Basappa ‘Go home your wife is calling in my name. Your children are starving’. But Basappa was not being spared by Sri Swamy Charan. Basappa kept pressing Sri Swami’s feet.
Then Sri Swami gets up and starts walking fast, towards the forest. Shri Swami’s walking speed was such that Basappa had to run after Shri Swami. Seeing that Basappa was coming to serve instead of going home, again Basappa was asked by Sri Swami to go home. But Basappa did not listen.
Basappa did not know that we followed Sri Swami and reached the middle of the forest. It was pitch dark. And in that darkness, Basappa’s foot meets a snake and Basappa comes to his senses. And there were many snakes crawling around.
Then Shri Swami lovingly said to Basappa, ‘ Take, as much as you want, your poverty is over from today. Don’t hesitate.’
Then Basappa picks up a snake in fear and wraps it in a cloth. And reaches a shrine with Sri Swami.
When Basappa opens the cloth sitting on the altar of the temple, the snake hides and is replaced by a golden snake. Thus Sri Swami gives him the fruits of Basappa’s unwavering devotion for so many days. And remove his poverty. Later, Sri Swami bids farewell to Basappa, telling him to be merciful.
This is how Sri Swami brought about Basappa’s fortune. At the end of this wonderful story, the author foreshadows that in the next chapter we will narrate the story of Sri Swamisuta. And here ends the fifteenth chapter of Sri Swami Charitra Saramrita.
